Hornets record second straight shutout.
| presented by: |
Four different Hornets found the end zone Friday night while the defense held Cowanesque Valley (1-7) under 100 yards and scoreless to record their third win in a row and improve their record to 5-3.
It was also the Hornet's second straight shutout, as the defeated Montgomery 54-0 the previous week.
On Friday in Westfield, Wellsboro ran up 429 yards of total offense while holding CV to 86 yards and only one pass completion. The Hornets were only forced to punt once.
Sophomore Aaron Moss, who led all rushers with 105 yards on 17 carries, scored first for the Hornets. He took the ball in from four yards out just before the first quarter ended.
The Hornets were without Pat Driebelbies, who usually attempts extra points. As a result, Wellsboro attempted a two-point conversion on each of their five touchdowns and were only successful on their last one.
It didn't matter much, though, as Moss' touchdown was all the scoring that Wellsboro would need.
Wellsboro scored again early in the second quarter as Cameron Jones found Colton Acorn with 11 minutes left to play in the half. Acorn did most of the work as he scored on a 65-yard passing play to extend the lead to 12-0.
The Indians had a few opportunities and found themselves at the Wellsboro 41-yard line with about three minutes left to play in the first half. Wellsboro's Matt Weaver intercepted a pass from Cameron Wattles and returned it 20 yards to put the Hornets in much the same situation going the other way. That was the only turnover of the game.
Two plays later, Jones found Jake Coolidge, who took the ball down into the red zone. A few plays later, Jones found Mitch Christman for a nine yard scoring strike on fourth down.
The Hornets took the 18-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Wellsboro received the second half kickoff and returned it to the Wellsboro 40-yard line.
On the first play of the second half, Steve Mengee caught his only pass of the night and turned it into a 35 yard gain. Mengee also had 47 yards on five carries.
Four plays later, Moss ran the ball in from 13 yards out for his second score of the night and extended the Wellsboro lead to 24-0.
CV threatened late in the third quarter. After forcing the only Hornet punt of the night, the Indians found themselves with second down and eight at the Hornet 43-yard line. The Wellsboro defense came up with a 10 yard sack. On the next play, they nearly forced another interception before the Indians punted.
The Hornets finished the scoring on the ensuing drive. A key play in the 78 yard drive wasa big run by Mengee that set the Hornets up inside the 10-yard line. Two play later, Mengee scored on a three yard run. The two-point conversion was good and Wellsboro ended the scoring with a 32-0 lead.
Moss led the way on the ground for the Hornets with 105 yards. Coolidge added 79 more on 15 rushes. Jones ended the night with nine completions on 18 attempts for 193 yards and two touchdowns.
Wattles was the leading rusher for the Indians as he recorded 77 yards on 17 carries. This Friday, Wellsboro travels to Wyalusing Valley to take on the Rams (4-4). They wrap up the regular season with the annual rivalry match against North Penn in Blossburg.
