Hornets sting Troy to even season record.
| presented by: |
USC was not the only Trojans team to get stung over the weekend.
The Wellsboro Hornets (3-3) scored on their very first play of the game Friday night at home to start a 26-20 victory over the Troy Trojans (3-3) on senior night.
The following evening of course, Stanford upset the second ranked USC Trojans in one of many upsets in college football this year.
On Friday evening, the Hornets came out firing. After getting the ball first, the Hornets wasted no time looking for the big play and the offense delivered.
Quarterback Cameron Jones put up a long pass and found Colton Acorn for an 80 yard touchdown strike just 20 seconds into the game. The Hornets missed the extra point, but the early score turned out to be the difference in the game.
Jones turned in a solid night, completing 14 of 25 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns with just one interception. Acorn caught five passes for 133 yards and both touchdowns.
It took a little while for Troy to respond. With five seconds left to play in the opening quarter, Brad Morgan burned the Hornet defense on a 64-yard touchdown run. Seth Grantier's extra point put the Trojans up 7-6.
The run helped boost Morgan's rushing average on the evening. He had 92 yards on just six carries with his touchdown run accounting for most of his yards.
The Hornet and Trojan defenses held the opposing offenses scoreless until late in the first half.
At the 2:20 mark of the second quarter, Wellsboro's Jake Coolidge broke free on an 18 yard touchdown run. Troy stopped the two-point conversion attempt, but Wellsboro took a 12-7 lead.
Coolidge led the Hornet ground attack, running for 140 yards on 17 attempts. Pat Driebelbies added another 53 yards on 15 carries.
The Trojans did manage to strike again before the teams retired to the locker room for halftime. With 44 seconds left to play in the half, Chance Wright broke free on a 21 yard touchdown run. The extra point gave Troy the 14-12 halftime lead, but that lead would not hold for long.
The Hornets started the second half in much the same way they started the game. With just 34 seconds played in the half, Coolidge scorched the Trojan defense on a 60 yard touchdown run.
Driebelbies did the honors on the two-point conversion run to give Wellsboro a 20-14 advantage.
The defenses again held for the rest of the third quarter and well into the fourth quarter.
Wellsboro finally broke the scoring drought as Jones found Acorn for an eight yard touchdown pass at the 5:21 mark of the final quarter. The two-point conversion run failed, but it was all the scoring that the Hornets needed as they took a 26-14 lead.
Troy did manage one final score as Wright took the ball in from 12 yards out with 2:53 left to play, but it was not enough to top the Hornets.
The win pulled Wellsboro back to .500 on the season and positioned them very well in the NTL.
The next test for Wellsboro is Friday night's game against a Montgomery team that has not won a game yet this year. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
After that, Wellsboro closes the season with three away games against Cowanesque Valley, Wyalusing, and North Penn. The four final opponents for the Hornets are a combined 6-18 so far this season.
