Hornets drop a heartbreaker in overtime.
| presented by: |
It took two overtime periods, but the Wyalusing Valley Rams (5-4) eked out a one-point overtime victory over the Wellsboro Hornets (5-4) Friday night in Wyalusing.
In the second overtime period Friday, the Rams' freshman kicker Paul Hugo nailed an extra point to give his team the victory.
The Wellsboro defense deserves the credit for keeping the game close. The swarming Hornet defense allowed only 114 total yards, recorded four sacks, and came up with two turnovers.
It was a different story on the other side of the ball for the Hornets, however. The Wellsboro offense did run up 200 total yards, including 118 on the ground. Four turnovers halted some promising drives for the Hornets, though.
Wyalusing struck first on the opening drive of the game. Tyler Crawford's one yard touchdown run capped a 10-play, 54 yard drive. Hugo added the extra point to give his team a 7-0 lead with 7:38 left to play in the first quarter.
Despite some offensive miscues that gave the Rams decent field position, the Hornet defense held and shut out Wyalusing for the remainder of regulation play.
Wellsboro tied the game 7-7 as the first half came to a close. After picking up a Ram fumble, the Hornets found themselves at the Wyalusing 37-yard line.
Six plays later, Cameron Jones found Colton Acorn from six yards out for a touchdown with 17 seconds left in the half. Pat Driebelbies added the extra point to tie the score as the two squads went to the locker room.
The second 24 minutes of play featured the defenses, as neither team was able to find the end zone in the second half.
The first overtime period was even more of the same. Rams quarterback Darren Mahoney watched a fourth down pass fall incomplete to give Wellsboro possession.
The Hornets came close to sewing up the victory on their possession. Unfortunately for the Hornets, Ryan Grinde got his second interception of the night to end the Hornet drive.
In the second overtime period, Wellsboro got the ball first and finally found the end zone on a six yard run by Jake Coolidge. The Hornets missed the extra point, though, opening the way for a Rams victory on a touchdown and extra point.
Wyalusing responded on their possession as Mahoney found David Brown from 10 yards out to tie the score.
Hugo nailed the extra point to finally sink the Hornets' hopes for a big win.
Wellsboro ends their regular season this weekend when they travel to Blossburg to challenge North Penn (3-6). The winner of the annual rivalry game takes home the Morton Jones Memorial Trophy. The Panthers won the trophy last season.
