Wellsboro vs. Cowanesque ValleyWell fans - here we are. Football season is upon us and Wellsboro is starting off with a bang! The Hornets took on the Indians as they traveled to Cowanesque Valley, coming home victorious, 41-8.

Senior Jake Coolidge ran for 109 yards total for the Hornets, including three touchdowns, while teammate Steve Mengee also scored three on a 50 yard pass, a 15 yard run, and a 60 yard punt return.

Coolidge recorded the first touchdown of the night within the first three minutes of the game on an eight yard run. He returned in the second quarter for another eight yard run touchdown and in the third quarter for a 42 yard run.

"We cam right out on the first possession ready to play," commented head coach Chris Morral. "Personally you never know what to expect at the beginning of the season, and we did well."

In the first half, the first line of varsity starters limited Cowanesque Valley to 17 yards total, while Wellsboro posted over 260.

"Overall, it was a good team effort," continued Morral. "The guys were ready to play, they were mentally focused. Offensively, we executed very well being early in the season."

The Hornets held Cowanesque scoreless until the final six seconds of the game, allowing the Indians' Tyler Wilson through to score on a 13 yard run, preventing the shoutout.

Wellsboro recorded 26 rushes for 197 yards while Cowanesque ran the ball 43 times for 67 yards. Senior Cameron Jones made 12 attempts with four recorded completions, no interceptions for 130 yards passing.

Friday, September 5, is a big game, as Wellsboro travels to Troy to take on the Trojans in another NTL matchup.

"They are a good quality opponent," commented Morral. "Our teams are returning about the same amount of varsity starters from the 2007 season, both really senior oriented. We will need to remain focused and ready to go out and play all four quarters."
