The Hornets played host to Lewisburg on Friday, September 12, suffering their first loss of the season, 7-34. Both Lewisburg and Wellsboro headed into the matchup undefeated, 2-0.
The Hornets held the Dragons scoreless heading into the second quarter before Lewisburg ran for a 38 yard touchdown, leading 7-0. Wellsboro returned with less than 17.7 seconds remaining before the half, as Patrick Driebelbies pushed in from four yards out and tied the score 7-7.
In the second half, Lewisburg's Mathias recorded a 20 yard run with 11:36 showing on the clock and James with a 16 yard pass from Bell to lead 21-7 over the Hornets.
In the final quarter of the game, Lewisburg ran to a 34-7 victory as Fisher recorded a two yard run and a 28 yard run by Gora within 13 seconds of each other.
"We had mistakes early," commented coach Chris Morral. "Defensively we played well in the first half. We just couldn't capitalize on any mistakes."
Wellsboro was inside the red zone five different times, only scoring once.
"That made a difference," stated Morral. "That is a huge problem when you can't finish through. Lewisburg did what it took to win. We had a chance when it was 14-7, when it was 21-7. We just couldn't catch a break with that many turnovers. You can't win a game with three interceptions, two lost fumbles, and unable to finish from the 20-yard line," Morral continued.
"Lewisburg is a very athletic squad. Whatever could go wrong, did go wrong and we just need to focus on the next game (Wyalusing) and play hard every quarter," said Morral.
Wellsboro's Cameron Jones was 11 of 21 for 192 yards, yet intercepted three times throughout the game. Garrett Stager caught six of Jones' passes for 98 yards while Driebelbies ran for 77 yards on 18 carries. The Hornets' remaining squad combined for only seven yards on the ground.
Receiving, Stager posted six receptions for 98 yards, while Steve Mengee and Jake Coolidge caught two passes for 16 yards and three passes for 78 yards respectively.
The Hornets play host to Wyalusing on Friday, September 19. The Rams post a 0-3 record and have been outscored 134-28.
"They (Rams) will be hungry for a win," Morral stated. "We will have to come out with intensity. We can't just show up and expect the win. You always have to watch."
