Recognition was given to the 1958-59 Hornet football sqaud at halftime of the game Friday, when Wellsboro played host to Sayre, as being the only undefeated team in history at Wellsboro, as the Hornets also posted the win over the Redskins, 54-6.
Jake Coolidge ran for four yards at 9:12, followed by Pat Driebelbies' three yard run and Coolidge returning with another 26 yard pass from Cameron Jones, taking an early 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
"We jumped on it," commented coach Chris Morral. "We came out with the intentions to play hard and the team did just that from the start."
In the second quarter, Garrett Stager garnered a four yard pass from Cameron Jones to add to the Hornets' lead and again three minutes later with a four yard reception from Jones. Coolidge finished out the half with a 30 yard run securing a heavy lead at 41-0.
Returning in the second half, Ryan Moss followed through on a 11 yard run to post a 48-0 lead.
In the final quarter, Sayre's Aaron Voelker put the Redskins on the board with a five yard run before Jake Clemens finished out the night with a 16 yard run for the Hornets, posting the 54-6 victory to improve to 4-1 on the season.
"I am very pleased with the efforts of the entire team overall," commented Morral. "Our defense need to play well and they did. Sayre has a quarterback that has done some really nice things this season, being the second leading rusher in District IV."
"Cameron Jones has been improving each week for us. He is back to making great decisions on the field," continued Morral. "The whole offensive line did a tremendous job controlling the line of scrimmage all night. Coty Betts, Zack Luczak, Jared DeBlois, Chris Shelmire, and Justin Cobb all stepped up, along with Mitch Christman at tight end."
Wellsboro garnered over 587 yards of total offense on the night. "That's a lot," Morral stated. "We did what we are good at."
Wellsboro has entered a three game stretch with some tough competition, now facing Towanda, Athens, and Canton on the schedule to come. They will continue to work to improve and be ready to go when they enter onto the field.
"We will need to enter these games focused and ready to play," concluded Morral.
Rushing, Wellsboro's Pat Driebelbies recorded 15 attempts for 151 yards with Jake Coolidge adding in with six carries for 85 yards.
Passing, Cameron Jones contributed for the Hornets with 216 yards total, while Wellsboro's Garrett Stager also posted four receptions for 148 yards receiving.
Wellsboro travels to Towanda on Friday, October 3.
