The Wellsboro Hornets traveled to Towanda on Friday, October 3, suffering a 12-40 loss to post a 4-2 record overall for the season.
"Basically, Towanda jumped to a 25-0 lead before the half," commented Wellsboro head coach Chris Morral.
With eight minutes left in the first quarter, the Black Knights' Travis Chesla garnered a five yard run into the end zone to allow Towanda the 6-0 lead.
"A bad snap gave Towanda a short field position," continued Morral. "You can't give the ball to them in the red zone, and we did that all night long. There were a lot of mental mistakes and costly errors down the stretch."
In the second quarter, Chesla returned on another run, two yards with teammate Nate Bennett running 38 yards with the interception to increase their lead 18-0. With another three yard run, Chesla dominated with the Black Knights posting the 25-0 lead at the half.
Towanda added in with Cameron Jones sack in the end zone and less than twenty seconds later, Chesla with a 45 yard run to lead 33-0.
The Hornets' Ryan Moss ran for 26 yards to put Wellsboro on the board, after another eight yard run by Chesla, with brother Aaron Moss doubling on a one yard run into the end zone.
"We talked about how we were going to have to play physical and we just couldn't pull it out," Morral stated. "We just weren't ready."
Wellsboro plays host to Athens (5-1) this Friday, October 10, as the Hornets celebrate homecoming.
"Athens is an excellent team," commented Morral. "They bring speed and return 17 starters from last season. We will need to be focused, ready, and eliminate the mistakes."
