Wellsboro traveled to Troy on Friday night, September 5 to take on the Trojans and were on fire, as they ran for a 35-10 victory to improve to 2-0 in the NTL.
Troy's Michael Rogers caught and ran on a 17 yard pass from Vance Spencer with seven minutes left in the first quarter to score for the Trojans, leading 6-0 over the Hornets, 7-0 with the kick of Seth Grantier.
Wellsboro responded with an 86 yard pass to Steve Mengee from Cameron Jones to tie the game at 7-7, after the kick by Pat Driebelbies.
With less than two minutes left in the first quarter, the Trojans took a three point advantage with a 28 yard field goal by Grantier.
In the second quarter, Mengee ran for a 41 yard touchdown (Driebelbies kick), and Jake Coolidge ran for an eight yard run to take the lead 21-10 at the half.
Returning in the second half, Driebelbies responded with a six yard run in both the third and fourth quarters, with the extra points good, securing the 35-10 victory over the Trojans.
Mengee rushed for 62 yards on six carries and caught 3 passes for a total of 100 yards while Driebelbies rushed for 62 yards on 17 carries. Jones led the Hornets passing with 201 yards.
Wellsboro also recorded 13 penalties for 92 yards, while Troy posted 8 penalties for 60 yards. Offensively the Hornets posted a total of 357 yards to Troy's 159.
"Right from the start the guys were focused," commented head coach Chris Morral. "We had a great week of practice with our defensive line having one of the best practices all season on Wednesday."
"We made some mistakes defensively, but were able to capitalize on their (Troy's) mistakes in return," continued Morral. "We could score off of Troy's turnovers and held the Trojans offensively to 159 yards. I give a lot of credit to our defensive line for this one. Aaron Moss was oustanding."
Moss garnered 11 solo tackles, four assists, caused a fumble, recovered a fumble, and recorded an interception for the Hornets.
"Defensively we put 11 guys around the ball all night," continued Morral. "The guys came prepared and focused on four quarters. We executed as we had anticipated."
"It is critical for our younger players to step up and face their first big test of adversity this Friday," commented Morral, as the team plays host to Lewisburg.
The Hornets lost their starting center to an injury and are down linemen wise as they prepare for the matchup.
