Wellsboro vs. WyalusingThe Wellsboro Hornets came out with intensity and ended with the same intensity, just as coach Chris Morral had asked for, with a 54-0 victory over the Wyalusing Rams to improve to a 3-1 record for the season.

Taking the loss by one point in double overtime to Wyalusing in 2007, the Hornets made sure to dominate the field and hold nothing back - just as they did.

"We knew we had to be focused," commented Wellsboro coach Chris Morral. "From the films, we were pretty sure Wyalusing had good size and had improved with each game this season. We focused on the win."

In the first quarter, Jake Coolidge intercepted a pass on Wyalusing's first drive and ran for 80 yards to the end zone to put the Hornets on the board. Returning two minutes later, Coolidge garnered another touchdown on a 45 yard run, leading 12-0 over the Rams.

Wellsboro's Steve Mengee would then score on the pass from Cameron Jones at the 20-yard line with just 2:22 left on the clock.

In the second quarter, Mengee scored twice for the Hornets, one from two yards out, taking a 34-0 lead over Wyalusing.

Heading into the second half, Coolidge ran from seven yards out to score for the Hornets and Mengee again added a 14 yard run to pull ahead 47-0.

Ending the night, Wellsboro's Thomas Johnston garnered a touchdown to secure the 54-0 victory. Wellsboro garnered 501 yards on offense. "That is a good night of football," commented Morral. "We never looked back."

"Overall, the entire team contributed. We were able to substitute some of the younger players into the game and they contributed greatly. I was very, very pleased with their efforts. They really stepped up their performance. The key was to improve with each game and each player on the field and we did just that," concluded Morral.

Coolidge garnered two interceptions for the Hornets, with teammate Nathan Bair recording one. Coolidge also added 119 yards rushing on four carries with Mengee posting 140 yards on 8 carries, and Pat Driebelbies with 109 yards on 10 carries.

Wellsboro will play host to Sayre on Friday, September 26 with a special halftime event celebrating the 1958-1959 Varsity Hornet football squad's 50th year of being the only squad in Wellsboro history to remain undefeated. Twenty four members of the remaining squad are expected to attend in recognition of this highlight.
