Hungry for a win, obviously, the Hornets prepared as they played host to Towanda on Friday, October 9.
Wellsboro was struggling to come off of a four-game losing streak and faced Towanda, who is third in the playoff point standings, which might not have been the game they were hoping to overcome.
Towanda is undefeated, 5-0, averaging over 40 points per game and over 400 yards, and also downed the Hornets in the 2008 season by a 12-40 deficit.
The Black Knights came out scoring on a 26 yard run from Dakota Roof to take an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter. Roof returned in the second quarter garnering a two yard run and the two point conversion to increase their lead 14-0 over the Hornets, at the end of the first half.
Towanda's Travis Chesla, who is nearing another 1,000 yard rushing season, ran for 17 yards, followed by teammate Cody Thompson's connection on a nine yard pass from Roof to power over the Hornets, 26-0 in the third.
Chesla dominated for the Black Knights in the final quarter to increase their lead before Wellsboro's Ryan Moss scored from three yards out, eliminating the shutout, including the extra point from freshman Ben Shaw.
Towanda passed for a total of 190 yards, while the Hornets posted 31. A total yard gain of 210 for the Black Knights topped Wellsboro's 58 yards.
Sophomore Thomas Johnson recorded three attempts for 13 yards rushing, along with Ben Shaw's six for 11 and Chase Barnes, three for 31.
Wellsboro will now travel to Athens this Friday, October 16, to tangle with the Wildcats. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
