The Wellsboro Hornets suffered yet another 74-14 loss to the Towanda Black Knights, on Friday night, October 29.
"Control in the first quarter was based on better clock management and great pass protection that allowed us to threaten the Towanda pass defense," stated Wellsboro head coach Brandon Falk. "As our protection faltered, they gave up a few sacks and put us in poor down-and-distance situations.
"Defensively, too many big plays were surrendered too quickly to keep the game close," continued Falk.
Towanda's Zach Ripic led the Black Knights with a 21 yard pass from Cody Miller, into the end zone to begin the scoring Friday night, followed by Wellsboro's Nick Saniga putting the Hornets on the board after connecting with a 20 yard pass from sophomore Ben Shaw.
Towanda dominated the second quarter with five touchdowns in a row to pull ahead of Wellsboro on a crushing 61-6 lead.
Returning in the second half, Towanda's Austin Schoonover ran back to back with a 53 yard run and a 67 yard touchdown run into the end zone for the Black Knights.
In the fourth quarter, Jevin Vanderpool took an eight yard run into the end zone for the Knights, securing the win with a 11 yard run by Trey Sites.
Wellsboro's Dylan Christman, a senior for the Hornets, dropped into the end zone after connecting with a 20 yard pass from Shaw to conclude the game, 74-14.
On offense, Austin Schoonover led the Knights with three attempts for 128 yards rushing, followed by Cody Miller, 12-109. For Wellsboro, junior Chase Barnes aided the Hornets with five attempts for 20 yards rushing.
Ben Shaw completed 17-of-29 attempts for 190 yards passing for the Hornets, while Towanda's Cody Miller posted nine for 13 attempts and 98 yards.
Wellsboro posted 12 first downs to Towanda's 24, with one penalty for 15 yards, and the Knights, four for 35.
Junior Thomas Johnston has recorded 906 total yards of offense for the Hornets on the season, while senior Ethan Callahan has posted 1,117.
On defense and leading the league, Johnston has also posted 119 tackles for the season, with Connor Coolidge recording 78.
"During a rivalry week you can feel the tension and animosity. Familiarity breeds contempt and our kids really want to ruin what North Penn has going for them this year. The boys are looking for some success to build on as our younger players come into their own and prepare to develop during the offseason weight program," concluded Falk.
