Wellsboro vs. Wyalusing 2010In another NTL playoff with the Wyalusing Rams, the Hornets suffered a 41-6 blowout, falling to 1-5 overall to begin the second half of the season.

The Rams' Paul Hugo took a one yard run into the end zone early in the first quarter to put Wyalusing on the scoreboard, followed with a two yard fumble recovery by teammate Mike Cobb to lead 14-0 over Wellsboro.

In the second quarter, Hugo took a three yard run to score, while Bryan Kolodzief posted a 19 yard run into the end zone to secure a 28-0 lead at the end of the first half.

Returning in the second half, Hugo again returned into the end zone from only one yard out and Tucker Allyn posted a 39 yard pass from Reggie Davis to score for the Rams.

Wellsboro's Thomas Johnston finally put the Hornets on the scoreboard from four yards out as he forced through the defense, concluding the game, 41-6.

Wellsboro posted 13 first downs and four penalties for 40 yards, while Wyalusing recorded 15 first downs with two penalties for 15 yards. Sophomore Ben Shaw garnered 5-11 for 62 yards passing, while Thomas Johnston added in 13 for 77 yards rushing. Shaw contributed with 16 for 22 yards rushing, while Chase Barnes also added in with six for 27.

Shaw is 78 yards shy of surpassing 1,000 yards passing this season. Once he breaks those 78 yards he will join Wellsboro's Cameron Jones, Will Osgood, and Todd Coolidge in the record books* for Hornets.

Jones posted 1,064 (2007) and 1,348 (2008), while Osgood passed for 1,071 (2003) and Coolidge 1,035 (1981) and 1,325 (1982).

Senior Ethan Callahan posted one reception for 34 yards and Nick Saniga caught two passes for 24 yards.

"Clear cut leaders are still emerging each week," stated Wellsboro head coach Brandon Falk. "We have had a number of individuals stand out in the six games so far this year. Thomas Johnston defensivley and Nick Saniga offensively have been the most reliable from week to week with other players providing sparks along the way.

"They played their best game of the year this past week," Falk continued. "Mentally and physically they fought the entire game and gave a full effort for four quarters. Bad luck on a couple of fumbles and one big play in special teams kept us from closing the gap in the score."

"Our boys were very successful running the ball and playing team defense, as we create more plays on third and fouth downs, we can continue drives that start out well for the boys.

When asked about the recent turnovers in each game, Falk stated, "We have been able to limit our offensive turnovers in the last two weeks to two. Turnovers on special teams are still hurting us. Nick (Saniga) did a gread job getting a long return on a kickoff near opponent territory and was hit just as he cut to open field. It was a great return with bad luck at the end."

Junior Thomas Johnston is now tied for six place in the state accoring to MaxPreps for tackles with 79 total.

Taking notice of junior Thomas Johnston's accomplishments this season, Falk continued, "Thomas is emerging in his junior year as a standout in the league defensivley. We would like to keep his numbers down only because that would mean that our opponents would be running fewer plays. He is a player that other teams have to game-plan around."

The Wellsboro team is focused on improving on each previous weeks' effort, watching film on Saturdays and Mondays, with those meetings showing progress each week.

"They are on the verge of putting together a complete game leading to a victory," concluded Falk. "Loyalsock and Troy are opponents remaining on the schedule that we match up well against and can break into the win column again this season with a complete mental and physical effort!"

Wellsboro travels to Loyalsock Friday night, October 15.
